OHST Award of Excellence

Tye Legleu, is Shell Chemical, LP, in Geismar, LA, production site’s Senior Technical Health and Safety Specialist. Legleu received his degree in Occupation Safety, Health and Environment from Southeastern Louisiana University. With five years of experience in the construction industry, 12 years of experience in process operations, and 10 years of experience in health and safety, Legleu brings a well-rounded perspective to providing health and safety support to the workforce.

Legleu began his career with Shell in October 1997. In 2009, after 12 years of working in production, he moved into the safety department on a couple of temporary assignments, eventually making the move permanent. In 2011, he successfully tested for the OHST certification. During those early years in safety, he was able to finish his education in Occupation Health, Safety, and Environment, graduating in 2012. As he gained more eligibility requirements, he would also successfully meet the requirements and test for the ASP and (eventually) the CSP certifications. Legleu continues his education and professional development through internal company correspondence courses as well as external industry continuing education courses, webinars, and collaborating with peers across the industry. Learning and continuing to grow his knowledge is an everlasting journey.

Since moving into health and safety full time, Legleu has helped his site work through incremental and critical steps in changing the perceptions and mindsets around health and safety in the workplace. He recognized one key ingredient in this cultural change, is building relationships with the frontline workforce, as well as with the organization’s leaders. It’s the building and development of these relationships that creates a sustainable safety culture of learning, growth, collaboration, and improvements! It is vital that the workforce recognizes that health and safety is no longer an ‘enforcer’ of company policies but rather a resource that is available to help with recognizing and evaluating hazards and help in developing hazard control measures.
